Dynamic QR codes you can edit after printing
Create a QR code, print it, then change where it points anytime — no reprinting, ever. Every scan is tracked. With U2L, every short link is a dynamic, trackable QR code by default.
What is a dynamic QR code?
A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect link rather than the final URL. When someone scans it, their phone opens the short link and our server sends them to whatever destination it currently points to. Because the destination lives on the server and not in the pattern, you can change it anytime — and because every scan passes through the redirect, every scan is counted.
A static QR code, by contrast, has the destination baked into its black-and-white pattern. It can never be changed and can't be tracked — a new destination means a new pattern, which means a reprint.
Dynamic vs. static QR codes
| Static | Dynamic | |
|---|---|---|
| Editable after printing | No — reprint required | Yes — change anytime |
| Scan tracking | None | Total, unique, geo, device |
| Pattern density | Denser with long URLs | Simple, scans reliably |
| Needs a platform | No | Yes (kept live on your account) |
How to make a dynamic QR code
- 1
Shorten your link
Create a short link to any destination. The QR code encodes the short link, not the final URL — that's what makes it editable.
- 2
Download the QR code
Export as PNG or crisp SVG for print. Put it on packaging, posters, menus, or business cards.
- 3
Edit the destination anytime
Point the link somewhere new whenever you want. Every future scan follows the new destination — the printed code never changes.
- 4
Track every scan
See total and unique scans, location, device, and time. Scans are logged separately from clicks, so you know what each placement drove.
Why U2L dynamic QR codes don't expire on you
On many platforms, a dynamic QR code is a metered add-on — start a trial, print your codes, and watch them go dead when the trial ends or you hit a per-code cap. That's a printed code that stops working through no fault of yours. With U2L, dynamic and trackable is simply what every short link is: no separate dynamic-QR SKU, no per-code limit, and your links stay live on your account. Print with confidence.
Dynamic QR code use cases
One printed code, a destination you swap as things change.
Product packaging
Move a package from a launch page to an evergreen page over its shelf life — one printed code.
Restaurant menus
Swap the summer menu for the winter one without reprinting a single table tent.
Posters & print ads
Point a campaign poster at whatever's current, and see which location drove the most scans.
Business cards
Update your links after the cards are printed — your card never goes stale.
Real estate signage
Flip a yard sign from 'for sale' to 'sold' or a new listing, instantly.
Event badges & PDFs
Route badge or document QR codes to live schedules and files you update as things change.
Dynamic QR code FAQ
Can I change a QR code's destination after it's printed?+
Yes, if it's dynamic. A dynamic QR code encodes a short link rather than the final URL, so you edit where that short link points and every future scan follows the new destination. The printed pattern never changes and doesn't need reprinting. Static QR codes can't be changed — the URL is baked into the pattern.
What's the difference between a dynamic and a static QR code?+
A static code stores the destination inside the pattern itself: permanent, unchangeable, and impossible to track. A dynamic code stores a short redirect URL, so you can change the destination anytime and every scan is counted. Static is one fixed link forever; dynamic is editable and trackable.
Do dynamic QR codes expire?+
The QR pattern never expires — it's just ink. What can expire is the redirect behind it: on many platforms, if your subscription lapses the code stops working. With U2L, your short link stays active on your account, so the code keeps redirecting. Always confirm your provider keeps the link live before printing at scale.
Are dynamic QR codes free?+
U2L makes every short link a dynamic, trackable QR by default — there's no separate dynamic-QR purchase and no per-code cap. Many competitors gate dynamic codes behind a trial or monthly plan, and free static generators can't be edited or tracked at all.
How do I track scans on a QR code?+
Only dynamic codes can be tracked. Because each scan passes through the short link's redirect, U2L records total and unique scans, time, location, and device — and logs QR scans as a distinct event separate from other clicks, so you can see which printed placement drove action.
Will editing the destination reset my scan analytics?+
No. Changing the destination only affects where future scans go. Your historical scan counts, locations, and device data all carry over, so you keep a continuous record across every destination the code has pointed to.
Can one QR code point to different pages over time?+
Yes — that's the core benefit. The same printed code can move from a launch page to an evergreen page, a property sign from 'for sale' to 'sold,' or a menu from summer to winter, all without reprinting.
Why does my long URL make a messier QR code?+
Static codes encode the entire URL, so long links create dense, hard-to-scan patterns. A dynamic code encodes only a short link, producing a simpler, cleaner pattern that scans faster and more reliably at small sizes or from a distance.
Are dynamic QR codes safe?+
The code itself is a passive data container — safety depends on the destination. Dynamic codes are actually safer to operate: if a link is ever compromised or wrong, you can kill or replace it instantly without reprinting. Always use HTTPS destinations.
Do I need a special app to scan a dynamic QR code?+
No. Every modern phone camera scans it natively. To the scanner a dynamic code looks and behaves like any QR code — the redirect and tracking happen invisibly on the server.
