The honest rules: Amazon and disclosure
Cloaking is legitimate, but a few rules keep you safe and compliant. These matter more than any feature:
- Don't cloak Amazon links. Amazon Associates prohibits obscuring that a link goes to Amazon. Use Amazon's own amzn.to links (via SiteStripe) for Amazon, and cloak only programs that allow it.
- Always disclose. FTC and platform rules require you to disclose the affiliate relationship (#ad, "contains affiliate links") whether or not you cloak. Cloaking a URL never exempts you from disclosure.
- Tag links as sponsored. Add rel="sponsored" (or nofollow) to disclosed affiliate links. Google permits disclosed affiliate links — this is not black-hat SEO cloaking, which shows crawlers different content than users.
