What is link retargeting?

Link retargeting adds an advertising pixel to a shortened URL, so everyone who clicks the link joins your retargeting audience — even when the link points somewhere you don't control. Normally a pixel only fires on pages you own. Link retargeting moves it onto the redirect itself, so a single short link turns every click into an audience you can advertise to.

The difference from ordinary website retargeting is reach. Website retargeting only captures visitors to your own site. Link retargeting captures anyone who clicks any link you shorten — a far larger, top-of-funnel pool that includes clicks on curated articles, affiliate pages, sponsorships, and your link in bio.

How link retargeting works

A plain 301/302 redirect can't run JavaScript, so a pixel can never fire on a bare redirect. U2L fires it on a fast interstitial instead — here's the full flow.

  1. 1

    Add your pixel ID once

Paste your Meta, Google, TikTok, or LinkedIn pixel ID into the link's retargeting settings. No code, no tag manager required.

  2. 2

    Shorten and share your link

Create a branded short link to any destination — your site, a blog post, an affiliate page, a YouTube video, your link in bio.

  3. 3

The pixel fires on every click

When someone clicks, U2L briefly resolves the click on our page, fires your pixel in their browser, then forwards to the destination in under a second.

  4. 4

    Your audience builds automatically

Each human click is added to your custom audience on the ad platform. Bots and crawlers are excluded, so your audience stays clean.

  5. 5

    Retarget the clickers

Run retargeting ads to everyone who showed interest — a warmer audience that converts at a higher rate and a lower cost per click.

What you can retarget

The real power is capturing interest from clicks you'd normally get nothing from.

Curated & third-party content

Share a news article, partner blog, or podcast — and retarget everyone who clicks, even though you don't own the page.

Affiliate links

You can't pixel Amazon or a merchant's site, but you can wrap the affiliate link, keep your ID intact, and retarget clickers who didn't buy.

Newsletter sponsorships

Sponsoring another creator's audience? Keep a retargetable copy of everyone who engaged with your sponsored link.

Link in bio & social posts

Turn every Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube bio link — and every shared post — into a retargeting source.

eCommerce cart recovery

Bring back shoppers who clicked a product link but didn't check out, and deep-link them straight to your app.

B2B & events

Retarget clickers of a whitepaper, webinar registration, or LinkedIn post using the LinkedIn Insight Tag.

Privacy, consent & compliance

Retargeting pixels are advertising cookies, so the usual rules apply. For EU and UK visitors, GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive require prior opt-in consent before a pixel fires. California's CCPA/CPRA uses an opt-out model with a working "Do Not Sell or Share" link. The tracking is yours, so the consent duty is yours — name each ad platform whose pixel you fire in your privacy policy, and use a consent banner where it's required.

U2L fires pixels only for human visitors — crawlers and preview bots are excluded, so your audiences stay clean — and we don't store your clickers' personal data ourselves.

Link retargeting FAQ

What is link retargeting? +

Link retargeting adds an advertising pixel to a shortened URL, so anyone who clicks the link is added to your retargeting (custom) audience — even if the link points to a page you don't own. You can then show them targeted ads on platforms like Meta, Google, and LinkedIn.

How does a retargeting pixel fire on a short link if it's just a redirect? +

A plain 301/302 redirect can't run JavaScript, so a pixel can't fire on a bare redirect. Instead, the click briefly resolves on a lightweight page we control that fires your pixel in the browser, then forwards to the destination in under a second — the visitor doesn't notice.

Do I need my own website to use link retargeting? +

No. The pixel fires during the redirect on our domain, so you can build audiences from clicks even when the destination is a third-party page you don't own — a news article, an affiliate or merchant page, a podcast, or a YouTube video.

Which ad platforms and pixels are supported? +

Meta (Facebook and Instagram) Pixel, Google Ads remarketing tag, Google Tag Manager, TikTok Pixel, and the LinkedIn Insight Tag, with more platforms added over time. You can attach up to five pixels to a single link.

Can I add more than one pixel to a single link? +

Yes. A single click can populate audiences on multiple platforms at once — for example Meta, Google, and LinkedIn together. You add each pixel once, then reuse it across as many links as your plan allows.

Does adding a pixel slow down my link? +

Barely. The page that fires the pixel adds roughly 0.1–0.3 seconds before forwarding to the destination, which visitors don't perceive. Links without a pixel keep redirecting instantly.

Can I retarget people who click affiliate links or links I don't own? +

Yes. You can't place your pixel on Amazon or a merchant's site, but you can wrap the link — your affiliate ID stays intact, and everyone who clicks joins your audience, so you can retarget the ones who didn't convert.

Is link retargeting GDPR compliant? +

The technique is legal in major markets when you follow privacy law. For EU and UK visitors, GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive require prior consent before the pixel fires; California's CCPA/CPRA uses an opt-out model. The tracking is yours, so the consent duty is yours — disclose the pixels you fire in your privacy policy and use a consent banner where required.

How is link retargeting different from website retargeting? +

Website retargeting only captures visitors to your own site. Link retargeting captures anyone who clicks any link you shorten, regardless of destination — a much larger top-of-funnel pool that includes clicks on content you didn't create.

How many clicks do I need before I can run retargeting ads? +

It depends on the platform. Meta, for example, generally needs at least around 100 people in a custom audience before you can run ads to it, and more is better for stable delivery — so give the audience time to accumulate clicks first.

Does link retargeting still work after iOS 14 and App Tracking Transparency? +

It still works, with caveats. ATT mainly affects in-app tracking and shrank some audiences industry-wide. Most short-link clicks resolve in the browser, so link retargeting remains a useful way to rebuild top-of-funnel audiences — best paired with server-side tracking such as the Conversions API for durability.

What can I use link retargeting for? +

Retargeting clickers of curated and third-party content, affiliate links, newsletter-sponsorship links, link in bio, social posts, product links for cart recovery, and B2B assets like whitepapers or webinar sign-ups.
