Smart links
A smart link is one short URL that routes each visitor to a different destination based on rules you set — their country, region, city, or device — with a default fallback so it always resolves. The rules are deterministic and yours to control, not an AI black box.
What a smart link is (and isn't)
"Smart link" gets used for a few different things. Here it means one thing specifically: a routing link. To keep it clear:
| It is | It isn't |
|---|---|
| A single short URL whose destination is decided at click time by rules | A plain short link that sends everyone to one place |
| Deterministic, first-match rules you define and control | An AI or machine-learning system that guesses |
| A redirect that branches by geo, device, or an A/B split | A link-in-bio microsite or a music release landing page |
How the rules resolve
Smart links are predictable by design. Your rules are evaluated in order, the first match wins, and a required default destination catches everyone who doesn't match — so the link never breaks. When both a geo rule and a device rule could apply, geo is resolved first and device second, meaning the device rule takes precedence. Because it's deterministic, you can reason about exactly where any given visitor will land.
Geo and device, combined
The power shows up when rules stack. Picture one u2l.ai/launch link: an iPhone in Germany goes to the German App Store, an Android phone in the US goes to Google Play, and everyone else lands on your main site. That's a geo rule and a device rule working together on a single link — no separate URLs, no per-segment copies to keep in sync.
Split testing and retargeting on the same link
Routing isn't the only rule a smart link can carry. Run an A/B split test to send a share of traffic to a variant and measure which converts, and attach retargeting pixels so you can remarket to everyone who clicked. All of it lives on one link, tracked in one place.
What people build with smart links
Global product launch
Route each country to its localized page or regional store from one link you share everywhere.
App vs. web
Send mobile visitors to the right app store and desktop visitors to your web app automatically.
Campaign personalization
Show different offers by market or device without minting a separate link per segment.
A/B testing
Split traffic across two destinations to see which converts, all behind the same link.
Go deeper on each rule type
Smart links are the umbrella. If you want the detail on a specific dimension, each has its own page: geo targeting for routing by country, region, and city, and device targeting for routing by iOS, Android, mobile, and desktop. Use them on their own or combine them into one smart link.
Smart links FAQ
What is a smart link?+
A smart link is one short link that routes each visitor to a different destination based on rules you set, instead of sending everyone to the same URL. Two people clicking the same link can land in different places depending on where they are and what device they're on.
Is a smart link powered by AI?+
No. U2L's smart links are deterministic and rule-based: you define the rules, and they evaluate in order with the first match winning. There's no model guessing — the behavior is predictable and entirely yours to control.
How do the routing rules resolve?+
Rules are evaluated in order and the first match wins, and there's always a required default fallback that catches anyone who doesn't match a rule, so a smart link never dead-ends.
How is this different from a normal short link?+
A normal short link has one destination for everyone. A smart link branches per click based on your rules, which is why it can serve a US visitor and a German visitor, or an iPhone and a laptop, differently.
What can I route on?+
Location — country, region, city, or continent — and device — iOS, Android, mobile, or desktop. You can also run an A/B split and attach retargeting pixels to the same link.
Can I combine geo and device rules on one link?+
Yes. Stack them: for example, geo can select the regional store while device selects App Store versus Google Play. Geo is resolved first and device second, so device takes precedence when a visitor matches both.
Is this a link-in-bio tool?+
No. A link-in-bio page is a microsite that lists several links; a smart link is a single routing link. U2L offers link-in-bio as a separate product if that's what you need.
Is this a music or Spotify smart link?+
No. Music smart links are streaming landing pages with buttons for Spotify, Apple Music, and so on. U2L smart links are routing redirects, not release pages.
Can I A/B test and add retargeting pixels?+
Yes. A weighted split test and retargeting pixels both work on the same smart link, so you can measure and remarket from one URL.
What happens if no rule matches a visitor?+
They're sent to the link's default destination. The fallback is required, which is what guarantees the link always resolves to something.
